We’re all aware of the old saying “Keep It Simple, Stupid!” At some point in our lives, someone is bound to have gleefully pointed it out to us. The thing is, it’s so commonly quoted because it applies to so many situations.
Yes, we need to dream big, but at the same time, we need to be laser focused on keeping things simple.
It’s simple ideas that take the
deepest roots in people’s minds, it’s simple user interfaces that people crave,
and it’s simple services that people want and need. People love simplicity, so,
as an entrepreneur, you need to feed the consumer’s love of all things simple
rather than letting your mind indulge in needless complexities.
Simplicity
applies in all areas of your business, so, do you have areas of needless complexity that you
could cut out?
Technology
We love technology. It has
amazing benefits for our personal and professional lives, but there can be
drawbacks, too. For people who run websites for example, how many of those paid plugins do you actually need? For app
creators, how many of those extra functions does your app need?
Technology is great where it’s
needed, but it’s tempting to add too much technology where it isn’t needed.
Sometimes, simplifying technology for your target
clients can even be a selling point as with a product
like a phone from JitterbugDirect.
You may have all these
technological capabilities but if your consumer is craving simplicity then it’s
all for nothing!
Marketing
If the fact that two of the
most recognizable marketing slogans in our world are “Just Do It,” and “I’m
Lovin’ It” doesn’t speak to the importance of simplicity, then nothing will.
Every day, consumers are
bombarded with thousands of messages for all kinds of businesses. It’s tempting
to think that the way to stand out is with the most exquisitely crafted,
complex message. However, keeping things simple can be far more effective.
It’s easy to try and solve a
problem by overcomplicating it, when in reality, the answer is often to
simplify it.
Communication
The world runs on email these days. Rather than talking to the colleague who sits next to you, it’s often tempting just to ping them an email. When we do this though, we’re just adding complexity where simplicity should rule. Face to face communication is not always possible and it’s not always necessary but it’s surely the most effective way to communicate.
Even when face to face
communication isn’t possible though, we tend to fall back on email rather than
picking up the phone.
When you engage in face to face
communication or a telephone call, it’s likely you will minimize any
complications that might arise from that conversation. The fact that “89% of American workers say email, text, and voicemail get
in the way of their workplace relationships” serves to highlight this.
Simplicity is Key
Many times, when things aren’t
going well, the problem can be that you got away from doing what you do best.
In these times, sticking to the simple things you do well can be all it takes
to turn things around.
Is it time for you to turn from
complexity to simplicity?
